Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies /policies in 4th grade
In 4th grade, we follow IHM's PBIS policies for our students. This means that students are rewarded and complimented for their positive behavior. Each student has a feather card stapled into their planner. Each time a student is caught going above and beyond and doing a great job, any teacher can ask that student for his or her card, and we will give them a signature on a feather. When a student fills a whole feather, they will receive a "big feather" up on our bulletin board. For each feather they fill with signatures, they can receive the following rewards:
1 feather - choose from treat bag
2 feathers - pick your seat in class for the day
3 feathers - sit in the teacher's rolling chair for the day
4 feathers - homework pass
5 feathers - lunch with teacher and 2 friends
6 feathers - "ticket" to a movie shown on the SmartBoard
Additionally, in 4th grade, tickets are given as whole group rewards. Students can earn tickets when the whole class is on task. Periodically throughout the class, either Mrs. Orem or Ms. Cavanaugh will scan the room. When all students are on task, they receive a point on the board. If not all are on task, the teacher receives a point. If the class has more points than the teacher at the end of the class, tickets are given out to each student in that class. The students put them in a bucket and on Friday, 5 names are chosen to pick a prize out of our treat bags.
If there is an incident or a problem in class or at lunch/recess, a teacher can write up an incident report, which is then referred to and dealt with by the PBIS committee.
4C follows all policies put forth in the IHM handbook. All students and parents are to have signed the page in the back of the handbook stating they have read and understood these policies.
Fourth grade promises to follow these rules as written by the 4C homeroom class:
Walk in the building.
Raise your hand to talk.
Keep toys in your bookbag until recess.
Treat materials respectfully, whether others’ or your own.
Be fair.
Speak and act nicely and kindly.
Use your inside voice.
Follow the Golden Rule – treat others as you would want to be treated.
Include others when you work or play together.
Do your own work.
Only talk when the teacher allows you to do so.
Only use the teacher’s equipment or go by her area if she says it’s okay.
Tell the teacher about a situation only if needed.
Follow directions.
Tell the truth.
Use the 3 R’s – be respectful, responsible, and ready!
Only throw trash away and recycle if you can.
Keep the classroom clean.
Listen to the teacher.
Stay seated unless you are allowed to get up.
Be silent in the hallway.
Keep hands and feet to yourself.
Stay focused.
Use your manners.
Stay in the classroom unless given permission to leave.
Ms. Cavanaugh’s extras:
Always have a book to read ready to go with you at all times.
Push in your chair when you walk away from your desk. Remember to stack it at the end of the day.
Have your desk cleared off when you change classes.
Keep your cubby/shelf area straightened and out of your neighbor’s spot.
If you drop it, pick it up!
