Overview of Subjects
Language Arts - the following are just a few of the concepts and standards we will be covering this year:
Reading - discovering different types of text, especially informational, recognizing themes and meanings of narrative and persuasive texts, using context clues to understand words, drawing conclusions, making inferences, supporting our inferences with evidence, discovering character traits, comparing and contrasting, interpret figurative language, multiple meaning words
English - recognize and use the correct number/gender of nouns, direct objects, proper adjectives, compound subjects and predicates, adverbs, coordinate conjunctions, and compound sentences
Writing - use figurative language correctly, produce certain forms of poetry, business letters, dialogue, as well as narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive paragraphs and forms of writing
**Spelling homework is given out after the previous unit's test. Students have a week to complete the tic tac toe homework and to study for the test, which is always on the last day of the week.
Social Studies:
We are brushing up on our map skills, and will work on discovering and learning the different types of landforms and bodies of water.
Then we will begin to move region by region around the country, and learn what makes those states go together in some way. We will also be memorizing the state capital and postal abbreviation, as well as its location on a map.
After Christmas, we will begin our study of Maryland. We will learn the geography of Maryland including landforms, climate, rivers, and the 22 counties. We will also learn its early history including the Native Americans and colonists, and what makes up Maryland today, including the government.
Info about fourth grade:
Homework is given each week for Spelling, and periodically for grammar and reading. Book report projects are given approximately once a month, and focus on different genres of books and their corresponding aspects to help develop students' love of and appreciation for reading.
Students will be using cursive increasingly throughout the year. We will practice cursive together, so even if a child has not been previously taught, he or she will have the means to practice. Cursive will be required in my room after Christmas.
I am always happy to celebrate birthdays! We have 20 students in 4C, and the same number in 4O, so 40 in total in 4th grade. You may send for just one homeroom or all of 4th grade - whichever is your preference. Please be aware that store bought items are preferred because we can check ingredients for those students affected by food allergies, of which we have several.
